Order That Repeats vs. Information That Specifies

  • Concede the entropy objection completely. The Earth is not a sealed box, energy flows through it, and structure follows at no cost.
  • Energy makes pattern: convection cells above a Rayleigh number of about 1,708, hurricanes, snow crystals. It has never been shown to make code.
  • A Penrose tiling never repeats and still carries no message, because every local patch appears in every other tiling. Aperiodic is not the same as informational.
  • The twenty enzymes that enforce the genetic code are themselves written in the code they enforce. Turning energy into information requires something that already reads it.

473 Genes and 149 Mysteries

  • Stripped to the bone, the smallest cell anyone has built still needed 473 genes, and a third of them could not be given a specific function.
  • The first design failed outright. Quasi-essential genes and synthetic lethal pairs meant the requirements could not be read off the sequence, even with the whole sequence in hand.
  • 473 is the floor for a pampered parasite in rich medium. A free-living bacterium in the open ocean needs 1,354 genes.
  • The honest claim is narrow: nobody can currently name a simpler working autonomous system. Not that none could exist.
